Calver was born in Kent. He studied at St. Martins School of Art and Winchester School of Art. He qualified in 1971. He lives and works in Devon. He has been the recipient of several Arts Council Awards and also of a Grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation in New York. In 1996 he became a Member of the Newlyn Society of Artists with whom he regularly exhibits. This year he had work selected for the major comprehensive survey of British printmakers held at The Exchange gallery in Penzance.
He has exhibited in the UK, Germany and Japan. In 2008 he had a large solo exhibition in the Manu Chhabria Gallery in Dubai. His works are in many Corporate and Private collections.
He spends many hours working out colour relationships. His work is meticulously planned before final completion. His paintings owe much to our urban environment. The colours may be very powerful or, conversely, quiet and subdued. The intention is always to use them to articulate pictorial space and to create an affective vibrancy.
