Anthony Benjamins

Born Boarhunt, Hampshire 29 March 1931; married with two sons; died London 17 February 2002.

Anthony Benjamin was a versatile artist whose work, in both two and three dimensions, invested formal values with an air of technical experiment and a poetic response to the natural world.

Essentially an abstract painter, Benjamin extended his natural flair for bright, even fluorescent, colour into constructed "sculptures" using perspex and fibreglass.

The artistic instinct probably developed while he was serving a short prison sentence as a conscientious objector in 1949.
